FREE LOCAL RESIDENTS’ DAY AT NEWLY REFURBISHED BRONTË MUSEUM

The museum has recently completed a project with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund to improve the presentation of the historic rooms of the Parsonage. To celebrate, admission to the museum will be free to local residents of BD20, 21 & 22 on Saturday 20 February . Locals are asked to bring a utility bill or other official proof of address to gain admission.

The museum recently reopening following a major programme of work to improve its displays, which include a number of rare and important new acquisitions and items never previously displayed. Amongst these are items as diverse as Emily Brontë’s artist's box, purchased at Sothebys in December, and a pair of Charlotte Brontë’s stockings.

The museum is keen for local people to come along and see the changes made, since many contributed ideas to the development project through a visitor survey and a series of open evenings last year. The museum is open 11.00am to 5.00pm (last admission is 4.30pm).

We hope that people in and around Haworth will come and see the work that’s been done, which we feel has greatly improved the museum. There are some wonderful items on display this year, including things donated by local people, and these give an insight not only into the lives of the Brontës, but also life generally in nineteenth-century Haworth.

WORK COMPLETED!

Finally, after a very hectic month, hampered by the appalling weather in early January and with many surprizes and mishaps along the way, the redevelopment work at the museum is complete. There's new interpretation to improve the information available for visitors, beautiful new cases fashioned from English oak with new displays and new object labelling, and improvements to the decoration of the house too. The work has hugely improved the way in which the museum's remarkable collection is displayed and there is more of that collection now available for visitors to enjoy, including various new acquisitions; a tiny Charlotte Brontë poetry manuscript and Emily Brontë's artist's box purchased at Christies and Sothebys respectively, in December. There are also several items acquired through our Brontëana surgery detailed in a previous posting and items never previously exhibited at the museum, including a pair of Charlotte Brontë's stockings! The museum's thanks go to everyone who has supported the project including the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Idlewild Trust, the Charlotte Bonham Carter Charitable Trust and the Yorkshire and Clydesdale Bank Foundation, as well as people in and around Haworth who supported the programme of community events.

WORK BEGINS AT THE PARSONAGE

After several months of planning, work is finally underway at the Parsonage. Following our public consultation events we worked hard with Redman Design to develop plans for the changes to be made. These will include new interpretation through the historic rooms of the Parsonage to help tell the Brontë story more effectively to our visitors, new object cases, displays and labelling, as well as various other decorative changes such as new floorcoverings and window blinds to enhance the domestic feel of the museum. It's been a hectic week with all of the museum's displays needing to be removed and existing interpretation panels, floorcoverings and cases stripped out, as well as electrical work which will allow for new cases to be lit. Most of the work is still to be done however; decorations need to be made good, floorcoverings need laying, new stanchions and interpretation panels must be installed, followed by our new object cases; this will be followed by work on preparing object mounts and installing our new displays which we're delighted will include some objects which have come into the museum's collection following our Brontëana Surgery and which will help us to tell visitors a little more about the history of Haworth itself and the social context in which the Brontës lived. We're on target for all the work to be completed by the end of January, ready for re-opening on 1 February.

As well as offering enjoyable, interesting and useful experience, volunteers will also receive various benefits including training and free admission to Brontë Society events.

CONSULTATION WORKSHOPS WITH HAWORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN

An important part of the re-thinking our displays and interpretation at the Parsonage is to enhance the experience of our younger visitors. As well as the place where the Brontë sisters wrote their wonderful novels and poetry, the Parsonage is also of course, where they spent their childhoods and grew up. As a place simply to learn about children's home life in the past, and this remarkable family in particular, we know that children visiting today find much that they can relate to and enjoy. However, although much work was done last year to develop very popular interactives in the exhibition spaces, we are aware that the information in the Parsonage itself and the way it's presented is not as accessible as it could be to children, especially younger ones.
So to find out how best to improve what we offer children at the Parsonage, we thought we'd consult the experts - the children themselves!

Over two days in the autumn term of 2009, we worked with fifteen children from Haworth Primary School. All the children were from year 5 (age 9-10) and of mixed ability, and all contributed to the discussions and activities with great enthusiasm. We began by discussing what their favourite museums were, and what they liked best about them. We then explored the Parsonage with a questionnaire to discover their ideas about the rooms as they are now; what they'd like to discover more about, and how we might make the information more exciting; afterwards, we then came back together for a brainstorming session.

The children's initial responses were varied:

"I want to read Emily's diary paper but the writing's to small - can you write it out again at the side?"
"You should have somebody dressed up to pretend to be a Bronte!"
"I'd like to know more about the books on the shelves"
"I like the fire in the kitchen, it would be good if you could cook on it!"

It was clear though, that many of the children understood already some of the constraints we have here; a carriage which takes you back in time and round the museum to see life size models going about their business, might work brilliantly at the Jorvik Viking Centre, but might cause a few problems here at the Parsonage! The children also realised that some of the very hi-tec interactives they enjoy at other museums might not work here; not only due to lack of space, but because they just 'wouldn't look right' in the Parsonage.

So with a more realistic idea of what we might do, we set about trying to come up with some ideas. We did some research into the Brontës first; about their lives and what made them so unusual (as well as so incredibly famous), to give the children some background to work with and maybe some inspiration. We explored what the different rooms in the Parsonage might have meant to the Brontës as children and what kind of 'feel' the rooms might have had, as well as the different sights, sounds and smells. We got some really interesting and sometimes unexpected feedback from the children about this. For example, whilst I was expecting most of the comparisons the children would make with their own lives would have been unfavourable, (what - no telly??) that wasn't always the case. One little girl remarked 'I think it would have been nice and peaceful, chatting to each other, and no fights over the remote control!'

To explore these ideas further we invited a local poet, Charlotte March, to help the children get their thoughts down on paper in an imaginative way. A very lively afternoon followed, and some interesting pieces of writing. The other main strand of ideas we pursued was the children's interest in the actual objects in the rooms, and we thought about different ways we could present information about them. The children were very clear all along about not wanting to just have lots of text to read:

"It should be colourful"
"It would be good to have pictures or cartoons"
"Something we could touch"

After discussing lots of ideas that might be possible (and not just exciting!) we came up with the idea of having a picture of a 'mystery' object in the room on a kind of flap which you lift, to reveal an interesting and unexpected piece of information. Much as we also liked the idea of looking at the rooms more from the point of view of the Brontës' experiences there as children, this is the idea we decided to develop in the end; largely because of the issue of space and the necessity of keeping whatever we do very simple. The objects which will be in the final interpretation will all be ones the children identified as being particularly interesting to them.
We are hoping to install this new interpretation in the Parsonage in the early part of this year.

BRONTËANA SURGERY - NEW TREASURES FROM LOCALS

Back in October the Brontë Parsonage Museum issued an invitation to anyone who thought they might own artefacts relating to the Brontës or historic Haworth to come to our ‘Brontëana surgery’ and find out more about them. The museum was keen to encourage local people to use the museum’s resources to find out more about items in their possession, and was offering free, expert advice on such material to people living in and around Haworth as part of thie Heritage Lottery funded project.

As a result, there have been all sorts of discoveries as local people came forward with their treasures. Several items are currently being investigated, including a jam pan which is believed to have been included in the sale which took place in Haworth after Patrick Brontë’s death in 1861. The museum has been able to compile a record of Brontë-related material in private hands, including an 1834 Haworth rate book, a wonderful collection of Haworth church hymn sheets dating from the Brontë period and six books believed to have belonged to the Brontës, which were given to their servant, Martha Brown (see photo). Three bound volumes of the Family Economist which belonged to Martha’s sister, Tabitha, who also assisted with domestic work at the Parsonage, were kindly donated to the museum and will go on display at the Parsonage next year.

In February 2010 we are planning to include new displays at the Parsonage which will focus on the Haworth community in which the Brontës’ lived, and it is hoped that some of this newly-discovered material can be included. We would like to thank everyone who got in touch and to reiterate that people are still welcome to contact the museum to take part in the Brontëana surgery.

Final Feedback From Local Residents

On the 23rd and the 29th of September, the Parsonage hosted the two final evenining events for residents of Haworth, designed to gather feedback and ideas about forthcoming changes to the museum. As before, the evenings were a great success and generated some really interesting discussions, particularly about some of the Parsonage's more controversial exhibitions! Everyone seemed to find the evening rewarding, and it was certainly useful for us in contributing to our understanding of what visitors, and in particular local people, would really like to see more of in the Parsonage.
We have been very pleased with the take up for these events and we'd like to take this opportunity to say a final thanks to everyone who attended and gave us their time and enthusiasm. We apologise though to anyone who was on our reserved list and didn't get an opportunity to attend.

The Brontë Parsonage Museum is interested in speaking to anyone who thinks they may own household artefacts, books, drawings or letters that they believe to have belonged to the Brontë family or that have connections with the Brontës or historic Haworth

Throughout October the Brontë Parsonage Museum will be offering free, expert advice on such material to people living in and around Haworth. In addition to finding out what important Brontë or Brontë-related items might still be in private hands, the museum is also keen to encourage local people to use the museum’s resources to find out more about items in their possession and have the opportunity to benefit from conservation advice.

This unusual move comes as part of a programme of community events currently taking place following a Heritage Lottery Fund grant to the museum. The grant will also support new developments to the historic rooms of the Parsonage in January 2010, including new displays focusing on the Haworth community in which the Brontës lived. It is well known that various pieces of ‘Bronteana’ passed into the hands of local families following an auction of Brontë household items which took place in Haworth after Patrick Brontë’s death in 1861. Local Residents Turn Out in Force!

The first of three special evening events for local residents took place on Tuesday 15 September (there were meant to be two but the museum had to organize an extra evening to allow more people to join in!) Thirty-one guests attended and enjoyed a guided tour of the musuem, including the Library which is not normally accessible to visitors. All of the guests were Haworth residents. They discussed with musuem staff plans for 2010 when new displays will reflect the history of Haworth as well as the Bronte story. There were lots of good ideas and positive comments made - all of which will be taken into account as the museum makes plans for changes to be made in January 2010.

There will be two special open evenings at the Brontë Parsonage Museum on Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 23 September when local people are invited to come along and enjoy privileged access to the museum. Wine and canapés will be served, followed by a guided tour of the museum and a special visit to the museum’s Library, not usually accessible to the public, to see some of the treasures of the museum’s collection at close quarters and discus with staff displays for 2010 focusing on Haworth in the Brontës’ time.

The evening events are taking place as part of a Heritage Lottery funded project. The project will focus on renewing the presentation of the historic rooms of the Parsonage with new interpretation for visitors, young and old, and new object cases and displays. These events are an opportunity for local people to see the museum, find out more about its collections and help museum staff with new displays for 2010.

Special Evening at the Parsonage for Community Groups

A special evening event took place at the Brontë Parsonage on Wednesday 9 September, attending by representatives of various local community groups including the Haworth Village Association, Haworth Village Trust, the Worth Valley History Group, local churches, the Brontë Spirit partnership, Haworth People's Art and Haworth Fairtrade.

The event included a guided tour of the museum conducted by Education Officer, Susan Newby and a visit to the museum's Library with Collections Manager, Ann Dinsdale. This included a unique opportunity to see behind the scenes at the museum, including some items from the museum's collection relating to Haworth's social history and the Brontës in the context of nineteenth century Haworth.

The museum's plans for new displays in 2010 were discussed, with plenty of suggestions relating to how things might be improved and lots of positive feedback and ideas about the museum's intention to give a greater focus to the social-historical context in which the Brontës lived.

Here are some of the comments made and ideas;

HLF Local Community Consultation Projects

The free local residents day on Saturday 8 August was a great success with 270 local people taking advantage of the offer, almost half of whom were first time visitors to the museum. We also had a good response to the visitor survey which took place on the day. We asked residents some quite detailed questions about their experience at the Parsonage, and we'd like to thank everyone for their patience in responding!

We were obviously pleased to find that most residents rated highly the content of the museum and would visit again; we were equally interested in discovering what they felt worked less well, as well as what they particularly enjoyed and what they would like to see more of. The information that we gained from this survey is the first step towards our goal of ensuring that the redevelopment taking place at the museum will be responsive to these ideas and opinions of local residents.

Admission to the Brontë Parsonage Museum will be free to local residents on Saturday 8 August.

The Brontë Parsonage Museum was recently awarded £50,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to support an exciting new development project. Media Release - Brontë Parsonage Museum Receives £50000 From Heritage Lottery Fund to Support New Development

The Brontë Parsonage Museum has been awarded a grant of £50,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to support a programme of exciting new developments.

The museum has ambitious plans to completely refurbish the historic interiors of the Parsonage over the next two years. This will involve researching and introducing a new decorative scheme to the Parsonage rooms, the renewal of interpretation giving visitors of all ages information about the house and the family, and installing new object cases and displays. The project will also seek to create a greater focus in the museum on Haworth’s history and the social-historical context in which the Brontës lived. As part of this initiative there will be a programme of community activity to involve local people in the project. The Heritage Lottery Fund grant will fund stage 1 of the project which will involve the introduction of new interpretation, object cases and displays and the community programme of events which will begin with a local residents’ free admission day in August.

The museum, which was home to the famous Brontë family for over forty years, and is where Charlotte, Emily and Anne’s great novels were written, recently completed a major refurbishment to its permanent exhibition space located in an extension to the original Brontë house. The refurbishment was the first major development at the museum in over twenty years and the new exhibition space, Genius: The Brontë Story, which includes the treasures of the museum’s collection as well as fun interactive displays for children, has proved a big hit with visitors. This latest project will see further improvements to the museum.
